A novelist. Born in Osaka. His novel, Shokonsai Ikkei; A scene from a Séance which was published in 1921, was well received by Kikuchi Kan, then he became a coterie of Bungeishunshu(文芸春秋). He was also recognized a short story novelist by Izu no Odoriko; The Dancing Girl of Izu. He was a member of the Akutagawa Ryunosuke Award Selection Committee. Later he received the Nobel Prize for Literature. He was a friend of Mishima Yukio who committed “seppuku” suicide, the shock of Mishima’s death might have led him committed suicide by gassing himself.

Tsutomu was a writer born in Fukui Prefecture. He writing debut was a piece "Kiri to Kage" (Fog and shadow). Tsutomu won a Naoki price for this work "Gan no Tera" (Wild Goose Temple). Tsutomu won other literary awards for his many literary works throughout his lifetime including the prestigious Kawabata Yasunari price. Tsutomu died in 2004 at the age of 85.
