Maruyama Okyo "A God of Longevity"

Edo post era artist. Founder of Maruyama school. Born in Tamba. Pseudonym:Sensai, Chusen. Pen-name:Issho, Kaun, Senryo and other.Alias:Chusui. Studied the painting style of Kano school from Ishida Yutei, and introduced the Sou, Gen painting techniques into the Yutei's sketching style, and also studied the perspectives of Western paintings and developed a style of his own. His excellent works were in animals and plants. Died in 1795 at age of 63.

Nagasawa Rosetsu(1754-1799)
A Japanese-style painter in the late Edo period. Was born in the family of Uesugi in Yodo Domain. He was adopted in a family of Nagasawa. Names are政勝・魚, family name is氷計・引裾、nicknames are主計、別号. Different pen names are干洲漁者・干緝. He studied painting under Maruyama Okyo, then he began to develop his original painting style
Minagawa Kien(1733-1807)
A Confucians in the late Edo period. Born in Kyoto. In one theory, his father, Shundo, was an exclusive doctor of the Tofukumonin. Name was愿, family name was伯恭, as different pen names are 有斐斎・有斐斎. He established his own original acamedia as "開物学(Kaibustu gaku)". became a founder of "Kodo-kan" and appeared in great numbers of pupils. He learned painting under Mochizuki Gyokusen. He kept good company with Maruyama Okyo, Goshun, Gankku and Nagasawa Rosetsu.

A monk in the middle of Edo period. Name was also known as浄博. Another popular name was海眼. Different pennames were寿米翁、五字庵、南窓翁、白羊山人、如是通人. Was a pupil of Kumashiro Yuhi who was from the Nanpyo(南蘋) school. Was a disciple of a priest Gakuso in the Obaku sect at Shofukuji, Nagasaki. Succeeded to diffuse the Nanpyo style.

A painter in the late Edo period. He was born in Hizen. Name was Morizo, Nickname as Shukuga. His penname was Sosen as祖仙, later he changed his penname as狙仙. The Kano style and Maruyama Okyo as his original style influenced him, and he became the founder of the Mori style. He brought his ability to paint animal fur, so he used many animals as his subject of paintings. Especially he was good at monkeys and deer.

A Japanese-style painter in the late Edo period. Name; 元長(Motonaga), Spell;子淵(Shien), Pen name; 噲々(Soso)、必庵、為三堂 and so on. He learned under Sakai Hoitsu as an assistant. He was good at portraits, flowering plants, birds and animals with the decorative style. He was also well informed about haikais and the performing arts.

A painter. Born in Edo. He was a son of 橋本晴園養邦 who was the painter on a retained in the Kawagoe clan. Infancy name; 千太郎, later 長卿. Defferent pen name;克己斎・酔月画生 etc. He became a disciple of Kano Shosen. He cooperated with Ernest Fenollosa and Okamura Tenshin to be the first professor of Tokyo National University of Fine Arts and Music.(*1). Also he established "Nihon Bijutsu In"(*2), trained Hishida Shunso, Yokoyama Taikan, Shimomura Kanzan, Saigo Kogetsu, Kawai Gyokudo and so on. Later on he organized "Futaba kai" with Gyokudo and formed "Gaho kai". a member of "Teishitsu gigein"(*3)

Tachihara Kyosho (1786 to 1840)
A painter in the late Edo period. Name: 任 Spell:子遠・遠卿. Nick Name:Nintaro and Kantaro. Different pen name:玉琤舎・東軒 etc. He learned paintng under a monk named Gessen, later he was a disciple of Tani Buncho. He was acquaintances of Watanabe Kazan and Tsubaki Chizan. He reserched painting techniqhe of the Yuan and the Ming in Chinese era. He was good at Chinese-style landscape and flowers-birds paintings.
Asakawa Zenan (1781 to 1849)
A Confucian. Born in Ueno. Name; Kanae, spell;五鼎. Pen name;善庵・学古塾 etc. He was a son of Katayama Kenzan who was a confucian of Secchugaku-ha(*1), though he was adapted to the doctor family of 朝川黙斎, then he changed his family name as Asakawa. He studied under Yamamoto Hokuzan. He was treated as an honored doctor by the Matsuura marquis, the Fujido marquis and many other marquises.

A painter in the late Edo period. Born in Shimotsuke. Given Name: Ayaru. Spell:Sisho. Pen Name:Seiran・Haibundojin etc. He has leaned painting techniques from Shimazaki Unpo, he kept company with many good Families later. He was expert in life drawing and also he was good at ceramics and oil paintings.

Uragami Gyokudo "KOZAN FUGETU"

Career Outlines:

Gyokudo was a literal painter in the late Edo period. Given name: Kiyou. Pseudonym; Kimi suke: Penname; Gyokudo; Other penname Bokusai. Popular name; Heiuemon. He was born in Bizen and served under the Okayama feudal clan. He later traveled Japan with a Japanese harp in hand. He was later associated with Tanomura Chikuden, Kimura Kenkado, Tani Bunki, and Okada Senzanjin. Gyokudo settled in Kyoto in his latter years. Even though Gyokudo was a self taught painter, this laissez-faire landscape painting has unique traits and shows perfected techinques in the southern school of Japanese style Chinese painting. Gyokudo died in 1820 at the age of 76.

Monk of Tendai so of Edo later era.A Chinese poet.Born in Omi.A son of physician-Naemura Kaido.Penname:Nakuro Muchakuan.At early in his age, he was a learning monk of Tendaisu Musashi Meisei-In, but studied a prose and poetry under Nomura Toko, and went to Edo(Tokyo)to look up to Miyase Ryumon as his teacher, and also associated friendly with a Confucian scholars Minagawa Kien, and others.He was well versed in the internal and external calligrapher combining in Buddha Confucian, especially, known in poetics.Died in 1801 at age of 65.

A writer in the late Edo Period. He was a scholar of Chinese herb medicine. He was born in Osaka with the name Kokyo. He was known by other names including Seishuku, Tsuboiya Kichiuemon, and Sonsail His studies in Chinese herb medicine were with Tsusima Keian, and Ono Ranzan. He collected rare books, art curios, and kept company with important literary and important scholars. His family wealth in the rice wine business supported his collection as well as he studies in prose, poetry, and recording history. He died in 1802 at the age of 67.
